There's a thrift store in downtown Melbourne by the name The Daily Bread Thrift Shop. Today 7/25/14, I parked in front of the building on New Haven Ave because there's a pretty yellow building next door and it was a cute photo op for my daughter to take a picture for her daddy and sister who are both away right now. I asked my mom if she would like to go peek around at the thrift store next door while I took the picture of my daughter. I didn't take long for us to start walking back, when I noticed my mom already coming back and she looked flustered and confused.
She tells me that the lady that works in the store asked her to leave because she had a shoulder bag with her, my mom thought she misunderstood and continued browsing, the store employee followed her thru the store and told her to leave since my mom refused to get rid of her bag. My mom asked why and the woman tells her that no handbags or strollers are allowed in their store and escorts her to the door.
I couldn't believe what I had just heard, she asked me to go make sure she understood right. I walked up to the store front and they had a homemade typed up sign taped to the door that said no bags, backpacks or strollers were allowed inside, and that if you refused then you weren't allowed in the store. That you could either leave your belongings in your car or with them. I walked in with the exact same bag my mom had and she stared at the bag for a while and knew something was about to go down and that she had gotten caught. I asked her if she had a problem with my mom coming in with her bag, she said "yes, no bags allowed in my store",I explained to her that it was discrimination because people need to have their belongings with them, aka, medications, epi pens, inhalers . She responds by saying" I don't think you'll need your epi pen here" and the way she said it was with a smirk and devious smile. The kind of smile that someone gives you when they're being smart asses. I said" how do you know that"? "she has high blood pressure meds" or what if someone has a diabetic attack here in your store or an allergic reaction", she shrugged her shoulders and pretty much let me know she didn't care. She said her store is losing money everyday because they have a lot of shop lifters, and I let her know that not everyone is dishonest or a thieve and that what she was doing was unfair, discriminative, stereotypical and pretty much against the law, not just unlawful but a violation of peoples rights. I made sure to tell her on my way out that she would lose a lot of business because of her rule, people don't wanna carry cash or their credit card in the palm of their hands when they go shopping, again she just shrugged it off.
I went back in my car, as I sat there trying to calm my nerves before driving away. I noticed two ladies ( potential ) buyers walking into the store. They were separate and went in about a minute apart. Both with shoulder bags and neither one was turned away. I walked right out of my car to go see if the ladies turned in their bags as indicated in the notice up front. And, to my surprise ( but kinda expected) both were shopping and walking around the store with their bags on their shoulders.
This is when I noticed customers in line ( females) waiting to pay, with their bags on their shoulders. One was African American and had no bag( I'm guessing they made her turn her bag in or she kept it in the car) and the Caucasian customers all had handbags with them!!!
I told the woman that works at the store what was going on and she played stupid, she said she had no time to stop those customers because she was busy. I said" well you weren't too busy to chase my mom( Hispanic) out of your store while she was shopping, but you sure as heck let all the other ladies in with their purse. I counted how many in front of her, the ones I could see just in front of the store and in the line, there were more than 10. All white, free to have their handbags with them. My Hispanic mom was ran out of the store and the African American woman had her cash in her hands.
I told her this was proof that her rule did not apply to everyone and she just hand selected the people that weren't allowed in her store with handbags. This was proof that not only is this store discriminating people but is also racist.
She was stunned, would not even look at me in the eye and ignored me while I called her on it.
Some of the ladies were so appalled that they left their future purchases there and walked away.
One admitted she had no idea there was a rule of that sort in the store, the other said, she walked right by the store employee and was not stopped, when she heard me telling this lady that I would make sure the word got out on her unlawful and stereotypical behavior, some people had the decency to walk out of her store.
My opinion is if your afraid of shop lifters, know that they come in every color and every size, and apply the rule evenly. What this lady did was just apply it to Blacks and Latinos. Little did she know that I pay and I pay good money for things and she missed out. Plus I will never donate to her cause.
